Prairie has a commitment to a sustainable collaboration with the environment. Prairie was working on sustainability 25 years ago receiving its first national sustainable design award in 1979 - the Low Energy Building Design Awards from the Government of Canada for the Roseau Children’s Centre. We were actively involved in the design and construction of numerous sustainable buildings for the Maskwa Project – a non-profit alternative energy wilderness conference centre between 1976 and 1990. Prairie developed several prototypes for an urban EcoVillage at the Forks and a Sustainable Urban Aboriginal Village. Prairie was the first firm in Manitoba to have a LEED® accredited professional and the first LEED® certified building in Manitoba. Mountain Equipment Co-op retail facility in downtown Winnipeg has received five national awards for the project as well as C-2000 compliance and a LEED® Gold award for the US Green Building Council. The firm is currently working on many green buildings in many capacities, including the new Manitoba Hydro Downtown Office Building, the Aboriginal Student Center at the University of Manitoba and the West End Cultural Centre.
