Prairie Architects worked with Entreprise Riel, a private not-for-profit organization, to conceptually design a Youth Hostel for the redevelopment of the St. Boniface Fire Hall N°1 located next to the towns original city hall in the heart of Historic St. Boniface. Prairie worked with Bockstael construction to develop a feasibility package. The design called for an 11,000 s.f. 3-storey addition which maintained and celebrated the historical characteristics of the original 6000 s.f. masonry building while integrating a modern energy efficient facility capable of accommodating 100 guests. The design includes a main floor open amenity space with a covered colonnade connecting to the nearby sculpture garden, a public restaurant or lounge in the garage area; dorm rooms, washroom and shower facilities on the upper floors and a roof deck patio for guests. The overall concept was designed to target LEED Gold certification and adhere to Hostelling International facility design guidelines.
