Existing Terminal North airside elevation
The City of Prince Albert engaged Prairie Architects to replace their end of life and undersized Air Terminal Building (ATB) and to meet the City’s long-term Planning Horizon to 2040. Following our consultation with key stakeholders; CATSA, Transport Canada, Nav Canada, Rise Air, and City of PA it became clear that the ATB served (3) unique passenger types with divergent needs; (1) the scheduled northern resident passenger travelling with large quantities of purchased goods and oversized items, (2) the chartered mining companies aircraft and crew, and (3) the professionals traveling for business, education, and legal work. As such, the current 2019 passenger peak count of 35,000 was escalated to meet the 2040 forecast of 45,000 passenger peak.
The new ATB plans extend east - west, parallel to the apron, and west of the existing ATB. It was key that the expansion be handled in a single phased approach to minimize any impact on passenger travel, medical transport, professional travel and the delivery of perishable goods during the full duration of construction. As such, the new ATB was split into operational zones with the building massing developed as a interconnecting atrium spine between check-in, departures and arrivals:
new arrivals to the east includes a baggage garage with ground side connection for transporting oversized goods (truck tires, doors, pallets, etc.). The higher volume of passengers in the check-in queuing line required 8 ticketing desks and Airline support offices located directly east of the counters.
leading west via the central atrium towards CATSA screening room and opposite side is the administration meeting room, the public washrooms with individual accessible family washrooms, community marketing area (space for advertising TV’s and signage), drinking fountains, and luggage cart storage.
departures required 2 boarding counters, Gate 1 & 2, and exit via one large vestibule to access airside and their departing Planes. It is equipped with 130 seat holdroom and designed for maximum flexibility and can be partitioned off to be come a 59 seat, or a full 130 seat, secure holdroom accessed directly from CATSA.
arriving passengers enter directly adjacent the oversized baggage chute and a full baggage carrousels for incoming luggage.
the ATB back of house services include a combined baggage room with make-up and cargo taking place within one large space. The staff also have access to their own washroom and break room including some general storage space.
Construction Drawings are complete and pending client approval to tender.
