Prairie Architects Inc. was commissioned by the West End Cultural Centre Inc. to undertake a feasibility study to investigate options for the redevelopment of the West End Cultural Centre. The building, as it stood, was not accessible to persons with disabilities and as such presents a barrier to public performances. In the heart of the Ellice neighbourhood, the WECC has become a legendary music venue in the city. A decision was made to renovate the existing facility and add to the south side of the building to accommodate a new theatre space. The existing theatre space was renovated to provide a larger main hall and bar area, as well as multi-purpose space to accommodate future artists and performances. Striving to re-use the existing historic building, and recycling usable building materials, the project is currently is targeting a LEED® Silver rating. WECC opened its doors once again its its newly renovated form for public performances on May 25, 2009.
